We all get that “Saskatchewan Spring” itch the second the snow melts… the urge to grab the rake, clear the flowerbeds, and erase every trace of winter. But before you bag up those dead leaves and old stalks, the local experts have a message for you: Stay on the couch!
It turns out that being a “lazy” gardener is actually a heroic act for our local pollinators. Many of our essential bees and butterflies spend the winter nesting in the hollow stems of plants or tucked under leaf litter. If we tidy up too early, we’re accidentally tossing out the very creatures that make our province bloom.
The golden rule? Wait until the temperature consistently stays above 10°C. Once it’s nice and toasty, our buzzing friends will wake up and move on. So, grab a coffee, enjoy the sunshine, and use the “bee-friendly” excuse to avoid the yard work for a few more weeks. Your garden and the bees will thank you!
