Another day, another reminder that speed limits in rural Saskatchewan aren’t just “suggestions” from the Ministry of Highways, especially when you’re hauling enough contraband to make a 1920s bootlegger blush.
Earlier this week, a traffic stop in the RM of Manitou turned into a logistical nightmare for one Edmonton man after Cut Knife RCMP found 140,000 illegal cigarettes tucked away in his SUV.
To put that in perspective for the non-mathletes: that’s roughly 7,000 packs. If the judge decided to skip the fines and instead forced him to smoke the evidence as punishment (the ultimate Saskatchewan “tough love”), he’d be at it for a while. Even at a pack-a-day pace, he’d be huffing away for the next 19 years. If he’s a “casual” smoker? He’s looking at 30 years of service.
