Saskatchewan’s population decreased in 2020, for the first time in over a decade.
Numbers released by Statistics Canada on Thursday show, despite growing by 1,050 people between October and December, the province had less people at the end of 2020 then it had at the start.
Only 322 people left the province last year, equalling a drop of less than 0.1 percent. This is the first time in 15 years that Saskatchewan ended a year with less people than when it started.
Saskatchewan once again lost more people to other provinces compared to the rest of the country, registering a net loss of 10,318. The province ranked worst in the country for three straight years.
Population across Canada as a whole, only rose 0.4 percent due to a lack of international migration during the pandemic. This is the lowest annual population growth percentage since World War 1.
