Staff, parents, and students at the Holy Rosary Community School can breathe a sigh of relief as the school will not be closing its doors.
In October of 2020, the Regina Catholic School Division’s board of education reviewed the school, largely due to the low number of students enrolled.
Twylla West, the communications and media coordinator for the school division, said it was a possibility that the school could have been shut down. Still, the review was part of a regular process that the school division does.
“Anytime there is a review, it sounds a little scary to the community,” she said. “Really, it’s just about crossing the T’s and dotting the I’s and doing all of the checks and balances that you need to do to make sure that everything is running the way it should be, that it’s still the best place for that school and that everything is as it should be.”
“It just means that our elected boards are doing what they are supposed to be do and making sure that they are being financially responsible as well as taking care of the needs of the students,” she added.
West said that the review looked at everything, but she said it focused on two parts.
“There is the heart piece, and there is the headpiece,” she said. “The headpiece is the numbers and the data, and their building conditions and those sorts of things, but the heart piece is always really important to us as well, and the heart of that school is the students and the community, staff, and really made it easy to see how valuable Holy Rosary Community School is in the neighbourhood, and it made it really easy to be able to keep the school functional.”
West noted that it made sense to keep the school open from a financial and community standpoint.
At the time of the review, 96 students were enrolled, increasing ten per cent this year.
