Saskatchewan can expect another heat wave this week.
While it won’t be as severe as earlier this summer, temperatures around the 30 degree mark are expected for most of the week, with little to no rain in sight.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Eric Dykes says sustained heat in the south is leading to heat warnings.
“The heat that has been — for the most part — to the south in the States is going to ride up into southern Saskatchewan,” Dykes said. “Some areas could see highs in the mid-30’s (Monday), mid-teen’s (Monday night) and similar temperatures once again (Tuesday).”
The hottest Regina will see this week is a high of 35°C on Tuesday. Dykes says that will not likely trigger a heat warning for this part of the province.
“The threshold for having a heat warning for the majority of southern Saskatchewan are highs of 32°C, lows of 16°C and highs of 32°C once again,” Dykes said. “When you have that one day that has the high of 35°C and on either side of that highs of 29°C and 28°C, it’s warm but it’s not quite meeting the threshold needed for a heat warning.”
Dykes adds while it is hot, 35°C is still not a record.
“It’s still 5°C cooler than the record for that day, which is 40°C on the nose back in 1917,”Dykes said. “Even though we are seeing very, very warm conditions (Tuesday), still not record breaking it looks like.”
Air quality advisories are a small possibility in Saskatchewan this week according to Dykes, as it depends on the wildfire situation in the northern prairies and in BC.
Only one is currently in effect for the province, that being in the Hudson Bay-Porcupine Plain area.
