The CFL has finally realized what we’ve all been thinking: the game was simply too unique. Starting in 2026, the league is rolling out a series of rule changes designed to make the game “faster” and “more exciting,” which is league-speak for “we’re tired of explaining what a rouge is to confused NFL fans.”
The highlight? The beloved rouge is being neutered. No more single points for missed field goals that sail through the end zone. Apparently, deciding a game on a strategic miss was just too much “tradition” for the modern era. We’re also getting a 35-second play clock that starts automatically—because nothing says “professional sports” like a countdown that ignores whether the players are actually ready.
And don’t get too attached to the 110-yard field or those pesky goalposts at the front of the end zone; those are being phased out next.
