Tuesday night at around 6 pm, a garage along with an encampment area went up in flames on the 1800 block of Halifax street.
Deputy Chief Gord Hewitt says that the garage, the majority of the tents as well as items within the tents were scattered and on fire. Regina Fire Service had the fire under control within eight minutes.
“They did a thorough search and found nobody there, so no injuries. Our typical process for that is we do a primary search when we first get there and then we do a secondary search to ensure an all clear and we did get an all clear on the property,” says Hewitt.
He shared that a witness at the scene told an inspector that they saw approximately ten people who potentially lived in the encampment flee the area once the fire began.
“The tent area was completely destroyed and there was significant damage to the garage,” says Hewitt.
The fire is under investigation and the cause is unknown at this time.
Hewitt also states that none of the three fires that occurred consecutively Tuesday night are related to each other.
