The federal government is providing 2.4 million dollars to improve food inspection technology for meat processors.
The funds will go to P and P Optica for its smart imaging system to inspect meat automatically on the production line.
The system analyzes the composition of food, evaluating properties like tenderness, freshness and protein, water and fat content.
The automatic food inspection system can detect imperfections and eliminate foreign bodies like plastic, bones and rubber.
These tasks are done on the production line in real time, generating information for processors to use to improve their products, manage suppliers and optimize production.
The investment will enable P and P Optica to build demonstration units that allow them to present their technology to potential users.
The goal is to help processors improve the safety and quality of products, make the food supply more sustainable and reduce waste.
A demonstration room will be built to optimize the technology for use by potential meat processing clients.
The hyperspectral imaging technology evaluates the safety and freshness of meat products by analyzing the colour and moisture.
It also gives a large range of data to processors.
