Sask harvest reaches 5 percent, up from one percent last week

The latest Saskatchewan crop report says harvest is at 5 percent, up from one percent last week and behind the average of eight percent.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says harvest is mainly underway in western areas of the grainbelt with 17 percent in the bin in the southwest.

Producers in the southwest and west-central area are reporting yields well below average.

There was widespread rain this week, with Humboldt receiving 83 millimeters and Broadview 65 millimeters.

The Saskatoon-Outlook district is very dry, and has received less than 150 millimeters or six inches this growing season.

There are water shortages in parts of the western grainbelt.

Crop damage this past week was caused by insects, strong winds, heavy rain and hail.

Grasshoppers are a serious problem in several areas.
