The NDP Call for Education Minister to Answer Questions about Legacy Christian Academy

The Saskatchewan NDP are calling for some answers from the Minister of Education, and what he knew about the allegations of abuse at Christian Centre Academy, now known as Legacy Christian Academy.

As many as two dozen, or more former students have come forward to detail both physical and mental abuse, as well as the students being utilized to help elect “conservative” candidates in elections.

In a news release, NDP Education Critic Matt Love says “This story broke to the public a week ago. The Minister’s office has known about these allegations for months but the Minister has been missing in action. He’s neither faced the media to answer questions, nor signaled any remedy from his Ministry,”

The NDP opposition calls on Minister Duncan to avail himself to answer the following questions:

  • Why has he not offered any solutions yet?
  • Does he take any responsibility as the Minister of Education to address allegations of exorcisms, paddling, and solitary confinement in publicly-funded Saskatchewan schools?
  • Is school-mandated partisan activity and political campaigning appropriate?
  • Why are independent schools not subject to the same access to information and transparency mechanisms as public and separate schools?

In a statement from the Minister, he is waiting on the criminal investigation to conclude before addressing the concerns.

The police have reviewed some of the complaints from former students, and the file has now been passed on to Crown prosecutors for a decision on charges. Its not know when the Crown will make its decision.
