Sask crop development advancing quickly due to hot weather

Saskatchewan crops are advancing quickly across the province due to hot humid days over the past few weeks.

Provincial crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says many farmers have experienced heat blast in their crops, and some may have an early harvest due to premature ripening.

He says many areas had wild weather this week, with hail, thunderstorms and even tornados damaging crops.

The heaviest rain was in the Duck Lake area with 99 millimeters of rain, while Earl Grey area had 78 millimeters.

Topsoil moisture is rated nine percent surplus, 63 percent adequate, 24 percent short and four percent very short.

Crop damage this past week was caused by wind, hail, heat, flooding, grasshoppers and gophers.

Some fields may be cut for greenfeed due to weather and grasshopper damage.

41 percent of the hay crop has been cut and 32 percent baled or put in silage.

Hay yields are expected to be lower than average for some producers because of hot dry weather.
