Elm pruning ban starts April 1

The annual ban on pruning elm trees is coming at the end of the month.
Warmer weather means the elm bark beetles that spread Dutch Elm Disease will become more active. A release from the provincial government said that fresh cuts on trees can attract insects, making infections more likely.
A ban on pruning elm trees runs from April 1 to August 31 every year,
Elm bark beetles breed in dead and dying elm wood, and pruning before or after the ban period helps reduce populations of elm beetles.
The province also said to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease, as well as other insects and diseases, it is illegal to use, transport, store or sell elm firewood.
