Council approves development of ‘first ever’ sustainable Tim Hortons

Regina City Council has approved a first-of-its-kind sustainable Tim Hortons.

The proposed Tim Hortons would be on Chuka Boulevard & Green Falls Drive in The Greens on Gardiner.

Mike Di Stasi of Di Stasi Real Estate is a Tim Horton’s franchisee in Regina.

“The goal is to have this location be a flagship Tim Hortons. It would be the first of its kind and the testing grounds for new sustainable initiatives right here in Regina,” he said. “We are excited to know that some of the things we test here could be incorporated into hundreds or thousands of Tims all across Canada.”

For what would make Tim Horton’s sustainable, Di Stasi said that everything is on the table, but he did have some ideas.

-Green Living Roof (Living green roof that reflects light while creating a strong heat transfer barrier.)
-Grey Water Retention (Greywater retention with an efficient irrigation system that utilizes stormwater saved in a storage tank for landscaping.)
-Mobile Order Lane (Mobile ordering only lane to help reduce vehicle idling.)

“We would be hiring professionals and consultants that would help us through this process. Everything is on the table right now, and we want to use those professionals wisely, and we’ve already started engaging with them to fund out what our options are,” he said.

Di Stasi said he felt like making the project sustainable was the right thing to do, and it is in line with what the City of Regina is looking to accomplish.

“We want to be proud of this project, one year from now and 30 years from now,” he said. “We want to take a look at approaching and hitting greenhouse emissions and reducing them by 50 per cent by 2030, and we net zero emissions by 2050.”

He said that the new location would create 35 new jobs.
