Fire erupts at Europe’s largest nuclear plant

A catastrophe beyond comprehension may be unfolding tonight at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in the eastern city of Enerhodar Ukraine.

After attacks by Russian forces a fire broke out at the plant – prompting fears of a second Chernobyl like event from the global community. Early Friday morning Russian forces focused their assault on Enerhodar, a city that is crucial to power production for Ukraine.

Fighting in the region has kept fire fighters in the area from attending to the blaze, and has prompted the International Atomic Energy Agency to be placed on full alert response mode.

An emergency meeting of the UN has been called to address the situation.

10:39 pm: Ukrainian officials say the blaze is bring contained. Most reactors near the fire have been disconnected. The threat of a major event due to the fire has been reduced.

We will have more on this story as it develops…
