Cattle industry hopes for turnaround in 2022

Saskatchewan cow-calf producers are hoping 2022 will be a turnaround year for the beef industry.

Throughout 2021 the weather brought a widespread drought, water and feed shortages in many areas.

Canadian Cattlemen’s Association President Bob Lowe, says there was also the irritation of seeing rising beef prices in the grocery store, while bids during the fall calf run lagged way behind.

Lowe believes the market will improve in 2022, with lower cattle numbers and good consumer demand forcing packers to pay more money for cattle.

The cattle herd saw some downsizing in Saskatchewan due to drought this past year.
