Police officer involved shooting on Montreal Lake Cree Nation

A shooting on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation involving police officers has led to the death of one resident.

Shortly before 5:00 pm yesterday Waskiseu RCMP responded to a report of a man in a residence who was armed with a firearm on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.

Officers were notified the man had barricaded himself inside of the residence by chasing another individual out.

The area was surrounded by officers as they contained the scene. At about 10:15pm the man exited while holding a firearm. Responding police officers discharged their firearms and injured the man.

Police officers immediately performed life-saving measures until the local EMS arrived. The man was transported to a hospital in Prince Albert where he was declared deceased at around 11:00. The family of the deceased has been notified.

An investigation will be conducted by an external agency. The Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Saskatoon Police Service to conduct the independent external investigation into the circumstances around the death.

There will be an increased police presence on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation.
