Regina Police charge 24-year-old man for evading officers and not stopping after an accident

Regina Police say an investigation into a suspicious vehicle Wednesday night, has led to the arrest of a 24-year-old man who faces charges for a hit and run and evading police.

Just before 9:00 p.m. officers spotted the suspicious vehicle at Dewdney Avenue and Donald Street, in the city’s west end.

Plain clothes officers in the area were able to obtain a license plate number, before a patrol car tried to carry out a traffic stop near 3rd Avenue and Robinson Street, however the suspect vehicle accelerated away.

However, units were able to observe the vehicle disobeying traffic signals and stop signs.

The driver eventually lost control near 7th Avenue and Connaught Street, hitting a parked car, before fleeing the area on foot.

A police canine team was able to arrest 24-year-old Shayne Checkowy, who’s been charged with flight from a peace officer and failing to stop after an accident.

Police say when they searched the vehicle they found a backpack containing parts of an air rifle, .22 calibre ammunition, and numerous vehicle keys.

The accused made his first court appearance on Thursday.
