Shahab keeping eye on Omicron variant

The Omicron variant has arrived in Saskatchewan, but the province’s chief medical health officer isn’t raising any alarm bells.

Speaking on Thursday, Dr. Saqib Shahab said the Omicron cases that have hit Canada have not had severe outcomes.

“So far out of the 60-odd cases all have been mild and there have been no hospitalizations.” Shahab said. ” I think that’s very reassuring.”

Shahab added he will be looking at what is happening in the United Kingdom citing the fact their vaccine uptake and surveillance is the same as Saskatchewan and that he is confident that as cases emerge that they will be detected.

The first cases were found Wednesday in a family of four that had returned to the province after being in one of the countries in South Africa that have been connected to the variant.

Shahab won’t say what area of the province this family is located in, but he did say there is no risk to the community
