Masters reflects on first year as Mayor

Last week marked the one-year point for Sandra Masters as the Mayor of Regina.

Over that time, the City’s 35th mayor says she faced numerous challenges.

“I think being elected during a pandemic is novel for any elected official; not having political experience beforehand and going into what amounts to an emergency health order was significant,” she said.

It’s also been a learning experience for Masters.

“I did explain to someone that my head hurts most nights when I go home simply because of the volume of information that gets taken in,” she noted. ‘Whether that’s council packages, or reports, or even opportunities people and downloading citizen concerns, organization issues, opportunities.”

She said that though it is a tough job with many challenges, she still loves coming to work every day.

“I have a position of absolute privilege in terms of who I get to meet, whether that is individual residents, the amazing community-based organizations, the arts groups, universities, the education facilities, businesses.”
