Bill 70, Extendicare debated during Question Period Thursday

More scathing criticism of the provincial government’s proposed Bill 70 — which would alter security on the Legislative grounds — was discussed today during Question Period.

As part of the bill, a new security team would assume many duties that are currently occupied by a group overseen by the sergeant of arms. Opposition deputy leader Nicole Sarauer accused the province of powering ahead with a bill that would limit protests at the Legislature.

Minister of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Christine Tell says taking proactive measures is something the policing community does constantly.

However, Sarauer doubled down by saying she sees no concerns with the current security structure, adding there are no known security issues that should warrant the change.

The opposition NDP also asked the Sask. Party government on their relationship with Extendicare.

While Extendicare facilities will not be operating in the province, Seniors critic Matt Love wanted to know if this meant the end of for-profit care in Saskatchewan.

Minister responsible for Seniors Everett Hindley says there are many long term care home in Saskatchewan, both public and private.

When it comes to the Ombudsman’s report that came after the Parkside Extendicare outbreak, Hindley adds just one recommendation has not been implemented, but it is being worked on at this time.
