Spirt in Sister Walk to honour missing and murdered Indigenous women on Monday

There will be some extra foot traffic in Regina Monday afternoon.

The Sisters of Spirit Walk will take place at 1:00 p.m. at the Regina Police Service Headquarters.

Heather Shepard of the Regina Police Service says they previous honored the Spirit in Sister Walk with a vigil, but are changing it up this year, as they asked their elders how else they can honour the missing and murdered Indigenous women.

The walk begins at the parking lot on Saskatchewan Drive and Osler Street. Everyone who is taking part in the walk is going to head towards Dewdney Avenue and from there will head towards the Place of Reflection at the RCMP Heritage Centre.

Shepard says the participants are going to be carrying 41 roses with them on the walk. “We are going to have 41 roses with the names of those missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls from Regina, the names will be on a tag that’s attached to each rose with a purple ribbon, purple is the Spirts in Sister colour.”

At around 2:15 p.m. there will be a prayer from by Elder Diane Kaiswatum, along with a short program.

Anyone who participates in the walk has to be responsible for their own transportation from the RCMP Heritage Centre.

Masks are required.
