Effective October 1st, Saskatchewan residents will be required to show proof of vaccination, or a negative test, to access a variety of services in the province.

The move follows a surge in cases that has record numbers of daily new cases of COVID-19.

Premier Scott Moe says numbers show the fourth wave is being driven by the unvaccinated, and the government’s patience has waned.

“Our hope was that, by presenting this clear evidence, that those who have chosen to this point to be unvaccinated, would make the right choice and go out and get vaccinated, some did, and some are yet today,” said Moe. “But many have not yet, and we have been very patient, possibly too patient, and that time for patience is now over.”

The mandate will be in affect for public indoor spaces like restaurants, arenas, concert venues, casinos, leisure centres, and gyms. It will not include grocery stores, pharmacies, and other necessary services.

Moe says it’s going to become more and more difficult for unvaccinated people in Saskatchewan.

“If you are unvaccinated, and living in Saskatchewan, it’s now time to get your shot,” said Moe. “The vast majority of Saskatchewan people that have done the right thing, quite frankly, they are tired of those that have chose not to. That is what is now driving the fourth wave in this province. Our  province is not going to wait for you anymore as we continue to move forward.”

Provincial Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab says the unvaccinated are at risk of contracting COVID-19 like never before.

“If you are unvaccinated, please step forward. Delta is twice as transmittable, twice as severe, it’s causing hospitalizations in the unvaccinated like never before,” said Shahab. “For breakthrough infections, I will stress, people who are fully vaccinated may get mild illness occasionally, and that’s why we all have to wear masks.”

Starting Friday, masks will be required in public indoor spaces, with the requirement being lifted by the end of October.
