The provincial opposition are calling on the Saskatchewan government to enact public health zones for protests around hospitals immediately.

Recently there have been protests demonstrated outside hospitals including one last week that was held in Saskatoon

Leader Ryan Meili was joined by Opposition Critic for Justice Nicole Sarauer in front of Regina General hospital earlier today, asking the Premier to help out the healthcare workers who have been harassed by protestors.

A mandate to make a bubble safety zone around the hospital is something that the provincial government should explore according to Sarauer.  She noted the government should have the authority under the Public Health Act to issue a mandate for a public safety zone and if they are unable to do so, they should recall the legislature and pass emergency legislation.

Meili believes the Premier isn’t providing the right kind of leadership for the province. “Scott Moe has given up, he’s given up in the fight against COVID-19, his inaction, his lack of leadership, his total surrender will lead to more lives lost, more illness, and it creates more space for the idiotic nonsense that we’re seeing today with hospitals around the country facing protests, people picketing against the health care workers, the health care heroes, working so hard that keep them safe and to take care of us when we are sick.”

The NDP leader added “Instead of using emergency measures to protect health care workers and the people they serve, he’s using those emergency measures to push to around the very health care heroes that we should be thanking and supporting. That’s not leadership and leadership is what we needed today.”
