Sask cattle producers can now apply for drought aid

Application forms for the Canada-Saskatchewan Drought Response Initiative are now available through Sask Crop Insurance.

The program will provide an initial payment of 100 dollars per breeding cow, with as much as another 100 dollars early next year.

The chair of the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, Arnold Balicki, says Saskatchewan is the only prairie province with a per head payment.

He says recent moisture has lifted the mood for many producers.

Balicki says producers are in better spirits now than they were during the endless 30 plus degree temperatures in July and early August.

He had expected the cow herd would be reduced by 40 percent due to drought, but says it will be less because of the government support and recent rain.
