Hail claims rise in late August in Sask

The Assiniboia area of southern Saskatchewan was struck by golfball size hail Tuesday morning, damaging some crops and vehicles.

The Assiniboia hailstorm follows a string of storms from last week that struck a wide area of the province, with widespread crop loss.

The president of the Canadian Crop Hail Association, Scott McQueen, says the third week in August was very busy, with claims from a wide area including Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Kindersley and Biggar.

He says the hail stones were a wide range of sizes from pea to golfball.

He says the crop damage ranged from light to severe.

McQueen says claim numbers are down significantly this summer but the payouts per claim are much higher than normal.
