SGI is cautioning drivers who may encounter farm machinery during harvest.
Spokesman Tyler McMurchy says you should only pass when it’s safe to do so.
“We don’t see a high number of collisions involving farm equipment on Saskatchewan roads. Typically, around 20 a year, but a high proportion of those do result in injuries and fatalities, so we’d like to avoid them, too.” McMurchy said.
Over the past five years, 96 collisions involving farm equipment on Saskatchewan roads have resulted in 44 injuries and eight deaths.
McMurchy says chances are that the farmer is only going to be on the road long enough to move that equipment from one field to another.
McMurchy says drivers need to be patient, “keeping in mind that this is a slow moving piece of equipment.”
“It’s in many cases larger than what you would typically encounter on a highway, so slowing down when you approach, staying out of that farmer’s blind spot and making sure you pass when it’s safe to do so.”
