Regina man facing charges after stealing cab Saturday evening

A Regina man is facing charges after stealing a cab over the weekend.

On Saturday evening, police were notified about a vehicle that was traveling at a high speed and passing other vehicles on the right through residential areas.

Even before a call was made, the speeding cab almost struck a police car. It continued north bound and was eventually abandoned by the driver near Cameron and 2nd Avenue North, after it struck the curb and punctured a tire.

The male driver was apprehended by police shortly thereafter. The cab was allegedly stolen around 8:45 pm, when a man managed to distract the driver enough to get him out of the driver’s seat on the 1600 block of Rae Street.

Once the driver was out of the car, the man got into the driver’s seat and sped away.

29-year-old Brydon John Whitebear has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, operating a conveyance in a manner dangerous to the public, impaired operation of a conveyance, and failure to comply.

Whitebear made his first court appearance on Tuesday morning.
