Police hand out nearly 500 seatbelt tickets in June, in addition to over 6,000 speeding tickets

Police were stopping people all over the province for not wearing a seatbelt in June.

490 tickets were handed out to people not using or wearing seatbelts who were not properly restrained.

The total includes 313 tickets for the driver failing to properly wear a seatbelt, 51 to a passenger failing to properly wear a seatbelt, 43 tickets for driving with a passenger under 7 who’s not properly restrained, and 83 tickets related to seatbelts and child restraints.

SGI says they’re baffled police caught this many people not using or wearing a seatbelt in a single month, adding the evidence behind seatbelt use is clear.

Vehicles have a protective cage to protect passengers in the event of a serious collision, and when you don’t wear a seatbelt, your chances of going through the windshield increase substantially.

SGI says you’re three times more likely to be killed if you’re ejected from a vehicle and 17 times more likely to be ejected if you’re not wearing a seatbelt.

In addition to all the seatbelt tickets, police handed out 6,458 tickets for speeding or aggressive driving, 974 tickets for distracted driving, including 874 tickets to people using their cellphone while driving, and 447 impaired driving offences
