The Saskatchewan Federation of Labour is using this day to call once again for a higher minimum wage.

Today has been declared “Grocery Heroes Day” in Canada. It is a day invented by the multi-billion dollar Canadian grocery industry to recognize those who have been on the front-lines since the pandemic started.

President Lori Johb says these workers have put their health and safety at risk since March of 2020 by dealing with public health restrictions, workplace outbreaks and unruly customers with next to nothing coming for most from the provincial government who continues to have the lowest minimum wage in the country and not implementing paid sick leave.

Johb also says Canada’s grocery retailers should be ashamed of themselves for making billions of dollars during the pandemic and not passing those profits to its workers through increased wages and benefits, they have used them to benefit shareholders and boost the pay of executives.
