Sask. farmers facing localized grasshopper outbreaks

Some Saskatchewan farmers have been forced to spray to control grasshoppers this summer.

Provincial insect control specialist, James Tansey, says there is a low forecast threat from grasshoppers, but there have been several localized outbreaks.

Tansey says farmers have taken steps to control grasshoppers in the southwest and the northeast near Tisdale.

He adds there are some grasshopper problems in rangeland southeast of Weyburn.

Tansey says overall, the province is not looking at an alarming year for grasshoppers, but there is some localized damage and control spraying.
