Ground broken for new recreation complex in Assiniboia

Monday was a  big day for Assiniboia as the town, about two hours south of Regina, started construction on a new $15.7 million recreation complex that will replace the current structure built in 1956.

Mayor Sharon Schauenberg says this is big for the community moving forward.

“It means progress, it means moving ahead, it means more business coming to town.” Schauenberg said. “It means people visiting Assiniboia and the region.  It is a big day.”

The new facility, which will be named the Southland Co-Op Centre, will have a full-size ice rink, a walking track, a multi-use sport and recreation room and a Lakota First Nation Education and Interpretive Centre.

It should be fully operational by fall 2022.
