SaskEV disappointed to see insurance rates for electric vehicles increase

SGI is looking at reviewing insurance rates for vehicles across the province, and while just over half of vehicles would see a rate decrease, electric vehicle owners could be paying more.

25 out of a possible 31 electric vehicle models will see a rate increase under the proposed rates, while five see a decrease and one stays the same.

President of SaskEV Jason Cruickshank says it’s a disappointing move.

“We ought to be doing everything we can to encourage more people to get into those vehicles, make it more affordable for people to get into those vehicles,” said Cruickshank. “It’s disappointing that it seems like electric vehicles are going to taking a significant share of this proposed increase from SGI.”

SGI says a main reason for the rate increase is because repairing an EV is typically more expensive than a gas vehicle.
