Winnipeg Street overpass project starts Monday

Regina drivers will want to know about a pair of major road construction projects on two roads that see a lot of traffic on them each day.

A two-year, $28.8-million project begins Monday on the Winnipeg Street North overpass to replace the current structure and improve the configuration of the existing interchange and roadway network in the area.

A completely new overpass will be built directly to the west of the current one, and extensive modifications will be made to the existing interchange to improve traffic flow, pedestrian connectivity and safety.

Other enhancements include the installation of new traffic signals, street lighting, widened roadways, extra turning lanes, modifications to utilities and improved drainage with the inclusion of three storm ponds. In addition, a multi-use pathway will be installed between 7th Avenue and Mount Pleasant.

For most of the project, traffic will be affected mainly by lane width and speed restrictions.

Chris Warren, director of roadways and transportation, said some lane and road closures will usually take place at night or on weekends, but drivers will need to make sure they watch out for signage during the day.

“Starting Monday, a speed restriction of 60 km/h will be in place on Ring Road between McDonald Street and Broad Street for the safety of workers and motorists,” explained Warren. “Motorists can also expect lane restrictions this week while the contractor unloads materials and installs jersey barriers.”

The City says Winnipeg Street sees about 15,000 to 18,000 vehicles a day, while on Ring Road, there are approximately 50,000 vehicles a day.

Meanwhile, starting at 6:00 a.m. Monday, a project begins along Albert Street North between 9th Avenue North and the north city limits. This project will improve drainage, extend the lifecycle of the road, as well as enhance drivability.

Work will be completed in two phases and drivers will need to consider alternate routes as follows:

Phase 1 – May 31 to June 14:

Albert Street N will be restricted to one lane in each direction between Highway #11 bridge and 9th Avenue North in the northbound lanes.

  • The off ramps to Ring Road will be closed in the southbound lanes. Drivers are encouraged to use Pasqua Street North or access Ring Road eastbound via 9th Avenue N.

Phase 2 – June 14 to 21:

Albert Street N will be restricted to one lane in each direction between 9th Avenue North and Highway #11 bridge in the southbound lanes.

  • The off ramp to Ring Road westbound will be closed. Drivers will be detoured to Pasqua Street N.
  • No access to Highway #6 or #11 from westbound Ring Road. Traffic will be detoured to Pasqua Street N to access Highway #11 and Armour Road to access Highway #6.
