Crop report says Sask seeding reaches 74 percent complete

Saskatchewan farmers made tremendous seeding progress during the past week.

Crops extension specialist Matt Struthers says 74 percent of the crop has been seeded, up from 34 percent last week and well ahead of the 5 year average of 48 percent.

He says seeding ranges from 82 percent in the southwest to 63 percent in east-central and northeast regions.

Struthers says there was scattered rainfall across the province this week with Tisdale receiving the highest amount of 25 millimeters.

He says Thursday’s rain will also benefit crops and is hoping for more moisture during the long weekend.

He says very little spraying is underway due to low weed emergence and strong winds.

For many areas, he says crop germination has been poor and patchy due to dry weather.
