Regina Executive Committee grants REAL permission to explore site for a new arena

It is looking more and more as if the Brandt Centre’s days are numbered with a new facility being built in the future.

Regina Exhibition Association Limited CEO Tim Reid, made a presentation to Executive Committee on Wednesday, with it being decided that a new $100-million arena should be built, so that a competitive advantage remains with other Western Canadian cities.

Reid says one question that has to be asked is where the best location would be.

“One of the outcomes the committee made quite clear is we need to explore all possible locations with this discussion,” said Reid. “A mid-sized multi-purpose event centre, with programs in excess of 100 days a year, really does become an incredible catalyst piece of infrastructure for a city’s downtown core.”

The next phase will include composing a comprehensive economic impact assessment, exploring
potential sites for the new event centre and developing a capital and operational model.

The Brandt Centre is 43-years-old and falling behind the industry standard, renovating the facility would cost about $40-million.
