Environment Canada said a spring storm packing snow and high wind would hit the province on Monday and it certainly did.

Highways have been closed across the province as a low-pressure system moves across Saskatchewan accompanied by snow and high wind that in some places have seen gusts as high as 100 kilometers an hour.

That system hit the Regina area mid-afternoon and remained through Monday night.  Environment Canada’s Kyle Fougere says it is slow-moving and will stay for the remainder of the night and into Tuesday morning before moving out.

10 to 15 centimeters of snow were expected to fall in the western part of the province with Regina predicted to see between 7-10.

SaskPower says there are currently 130 outages resulting in 14,500 customers without power and that those in the communities of Lucky Lake, Beechy, Assiniboia, Gravelbourg, Elrose, Kyle, Colleville, Eatonia, Whitebear, Shaunavon, Maple Creek and Macklin are expected to be without power overnight.

As of 4:30 p.m., SaskPower’s Outage Centre hds fielded over 9,000 calls since the onset of this extreme weather event.
