Saskatchewan to ask ombudsman to investigate COVID-19 outbreak at care home

An investigation into what led to the COVID-19 outbreak at the Parkside Extendicare long-term care home will take place.

The government says it has made a request for the provincial Ombudsman to find out what exactly went wrong.

In a release from the government, Seniors Minister Everett Hindley says the government will be formally asking the provincial Ombudsman to start an investigation into the outbreak. The release goes on to say that the government expects full co-operation from the Ministry of Health, the Saskatchewan Health Authority and Extendicare in this investigation and that the government is committed to releasing a final report once it is made.

The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses and others have been calling for such an inquiry to take place with the NDP tabling a motion calling for an investigation at a Public Accounts Committee meeting on Thursday.

Over 40 residents of the home have died as a result of the outbreak with many staff also testing positive.
