Inmate at Sask. Penitentiary dies due to COVID-19 complications

Correctional Service Canada (CSC) says an inmate at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert died on Friday as a result of COVID-19-related complications.

A statement from CSC notes that the prisoner passed away at an outside hospital. The organization has notified next of kin of his death.

“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, CSC has notified the coroner who will review the circumstances of the death,” explained Correctional Service Canada in a release on Saturday.

“CSC has dedicated health services and medical professionals in all of its institutions. We also work closely and collaboratively with local public heath partners and hospitals to provide complete and quality medical care to those who need it and to prevent further spread of COVID-19.”

According to CSC, this is the fourth death among federally-sentenced inmates who were diagnosed with the virus since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Another update of COVID-19 tests among federal offenders located in CSC facilities is set for Monday.
