The WHL is now looking to play a 24-game season.

The WHL has approached provincial and state governments with their proposal, and will be releasing a start date for the season once their plan is approved.

It’s not known if there will be fans allowed in the arenas at this time.

In a news release, WHL Commissioner Ron Robison says the league is committed to putting a season on for the players, and they are aiming to ensure players will be able to have an opportunity to play in 2021.

The WHL suspended play for the 2019-20 season on March 12, 2020, the same day the NHL announced their season was put on hold. Six days later, the WHL announced their season had come to an end. The 2020 Memorial Cup was to be played in Kelowna, B.C., but that was also cancelled due to COVID-19.

The league was looking to get started on Jan. 8, but that start date was moved back.
