Nearly all residents at Wakaw seniors home test positive for COVID-19

Wakaw’s Lakeview Pioneer Lodge is one of the senior care homes in Saskatchewan that has been hit with a COVID-19 outbreak.

Nearly all 44 residents tested positive for the virus this week with most of the seniors who tested positive being asymptomatic. As of Friday morning, four of the home’s residents who had positive tests have died.

The facility’s workforce has been depleted, too. Approximately 60 per cent of the building’s 70 employees are in self-isolation after contracting COVID-19 or showing symptoms of the virus.

Residents and workers were tested for the virus late last week after case numbers began increasing between Christmas and New Year’s.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority has been assisting in finding people who are familiar with the home that can help out while staff numbers are reduced during the outbreak.
