In-person classes at Marion McVeety School in Regina’s south end have been put on hold until Monday, October 19.

This comes after it was learned late Tuesday that a staff member at the school, which has a population of just under 400 students and staff, had tested positive for COVID-19.

“The decision to close the school is based on safety reasons.” Regina Public Schools spokesperson Terry Lazarou said. “Because the staff member that tested positive has had multiple contacts with staff and students and has been throughout the school, the decision was made to shut the entire building down and not just a classroom or an area.”

The school received a complete deep clean and disinfectment on Wednesday, but Lazarou says the protocols enacted in its “Safe Schools Plan” calls for a 14 day closure from when the last contact was had meaning the school won’t be re-opened until the 19th.

Remote learning will begin on Thursday with families getting information from their teachers about how this will happen.

All members of the McVeety community, whether it be staff, students or family, are being told to self-monitor for any symptoms of the virus and to take the appropriate steps and contact Healthline 811 if any symptoms do develop.
