The province’s education minister is saying so far, so good.

Gord Wyant says the school year has started much like the government had hoped and that COVID-19 for the most part has stayed out of Saskatchewan schools. He is hoping it stays that way.

“We’re cautiously optimistic, but we’re keeping a close eye on things.” Wyant said. “I’m very, very pleased so far though. ”

In the first week of classes, 14 kids came down with the virus, 9 of those in Saskatoon where it’s believed they may be linked to a large gathering where over 20 cases have been confirmed. Wyant says this shows the due diligence and hard work that was put forth by the province’s school divisions with the plans they came up with to keep everyone safe.

“School divisions, teachers, the other professionals in our schools have done a great job in ensuring our kids are safe.” Wyant said. “The plans put together by the school divisions were excellent.”

Wyant made the statements as the province announced they are investing $47 million into a new joint-use school facility. It will be built at the site of the current Argyle Elementary School in the Lakeview neighbourhood, and can accommodate 800 students – 400 on each side. The facility will also include a child care centre with space for 51 young children.
